Gynaecological surgery for benign conditions can be highly varied. Procedures can be for as short as 15 minutes or take up to several hours.

Prior to your surgery you will have a detailed consultation to discuss the nature, length, surgical outcomes and associated risks with your surgery. You will be provided with some written information and a surgical date.
Two days prior to surgery you will be given specific instructions on what time to arrive at the hospital and when to stop eating and drinking. Sam will see you prior to surgery to discuss any final questions or concerns and then he will review you on the ward once surgery is completed. A six week post operative appointment is recommended to discuss the outcome of the surgery and any associated histology.
Majority of patients will go home the same day of the operation. Sam will routinely phone your next of kin or emergency contact at the completion of the surgery to make them aware that the procedure has ended and advise when they can expect to collect you. However, if you stay overnight you can expect that Sam will do a ward round and review you either late that evening or first thing in the morning. This will involve discussing the outcome of the surgery and checking on how you are feeling post operative, addressing any concerns you may have about eating, drinking or your pain requirements.
All patients are reviewed in the rooms for a post-operative consultation. This includes a review of the operative images and report, review of the findings and histology and a discussion about your recovery and long term follow up plans.
A hysteroscopy is often indicated for many different gynaecological presentations, this is a 15-30min surgery whereby a camera is inserted inside the uterus to look at the internal lining.
You may not know, this is what the consultation is for. An initial consultation will involve a detailed history, pelvic examination and review of any investigations; a review of your symptoms and recommendation of surgery if indicated will occur at this time.
This depends on the nature of the surgery. Sam performs minimally invasive surgery allowing for quick recovery time and shortened hospital stay. Majority of his patients will go home on the same day and other patients will stay in hospital for one night.

We view communication with your GP as an essential component of your specialist care. Your GP is sent a detailed letter every step of the way. This will include a summary of your initial consultation, a letter from the day of surgery outlining the nature of the surgery and the findings, they are copied into all of your histology results and will receive a post operative summary after your follow up consultation.
